    Nia Technique®

    Nia is a well-being fitness and lifestyle practice. Through expressive movement - the Body's Way - Nia empowers people to achieve physical, mental, emotional and spiritual health and well-being. Nia changes people's lives. Nia blends a range of rhythmic music styles with carefully choreographed hour-long routines. It is the first and foremost 'fusion fitness' program of its kind, inspired by three art forms: The Dance Arts - Jazz, Modern, Duncan; The Healing Arts -Yoga, the work of Moshe Feldenkrais, The Alexander Technique; and The Martial Arts - Aikido, Tae Kwon Do, Tai Chi. There are 52 moves in Nia based on the body’s way of moving and everybody can adapt the intensity level of each of the move according one’s fitness niveau. Nia is for everybody. Nia is danced barefoot.

    The workshop is divided in two sessions which reflect the nature of Nia: form and freedom. The first part of the workshop will be based on the free and personal expression and the second on the form in Nia. In the first part we will explore the movement forms on which Nia is based and the second part is a classic Nia class. Focus of the class is to sense how the different movement forms give our body , our mind, our emotion and our spirit a different training , how they blend together and give us a strong and balanced happy body.

  • Deborah Lessen - Saturday 29 May - hrs. 10 am-1 pm- Mermaid Room
    Pre-Pilates Techniques: Foundations for Teaching the Pilates Method

    The dictionary defines ‘proficiency’ as ‘skillfulness in the command of fundamentals deriving from practice and familiarity.’ The word ‘proficient’ implies an advanced degree of competence acquired through training. As Pilates teachers, the development of our proficiency is directly related to an ongoing study of the movement concepts underlying the Pilates exercise repertoire.

    Deborah Lessen was trained to teach the Pilates method by Joseph Pilates' first protégé, Carola Strauss Trier. She has a unique insight and proximity to the source of our work in the Pilates industry today. Deborah will present her unique approach to understanding the movement concepts underlying the Pilates exercise repertoire. Deborah will draw from her diverse background including her work with Carola, Irene Dowd and other influences to help us define the basic movement concepts underlying the Pilates method.

    In this course participants will thoroughly examine:

    • Concepts of Center
    • Joint Release
    • Breathing
    • imprinting
    • Sequential Movement of the Spine
    • Mid-back, Lumbar and Pelvic Stabilization

    During this workshop, Deborah will define each concept. Through active participation and observation, participants will refine their visual and teaching skills. They will be able to more accurately assess movement and have new methods to target and neutralize weaknesses and asymmetries, thus enabling clients to progress more quickly and with deeper understanding.

    This course is beneficial to teachers of all levels.

  • Alycea Ungaro - Saturday 29 May - hrs. 10 am-1 pm- Hundred Room
    Reformer – Timing is Everything

    Tribute to Carola

    Every Pilates teacher should learn about the contribution of first generation teacher Carola Strauss Trier. Ms. Trier had a profound influence on the direction and development of Pilates, and her professionalism will deepen every teacher's approach.

    Deborah Lessen, a student and protégé of Carola, will introduce students to the theoretical and practical developments made to the Pilates method by Joseph Pilates’s first protégé, Carola Strauss Trier. The workshop will include a biographical portrait and will trace the professional development of her distinctive teaching philosophy and practice. Through movement, partnering session, and a lecture and learning workshop, participants will glean greater insight into the work of Carola Trier as well as their own teaching. Participants will also experience some rarely-seen exercises and variations from her equipment and mat work that can be applied directly to daily teaching.

  • Alycea Ungaro - Saturday 29 May - hrs. 2-5 pm- Mermaid Room

  • Barbara Morini - Cardiolates® - Hundred Room

    CARDIOLATES® originated from a desire to find a cardio regime that upheld (and even reinforced) alignment principles. Pilates exercises are not intended to be conducted at an aerobic pace: Pilates is a thoughtful mind-body system of exercise that requires attention to detail, form and alignment. Even when a seasoned Pilates instructor moves through a reformer workout without pause, the heart rate barely taps into a low-impact range. Pilates tones muscles very effectively, but a cardiovascular regime is necessary to burn unwanted fat.

    Because unstable surfaces cause involuntary muscles such as the transversis abdominus and the multifidus to contract, rebounding seemed the perfect aerobic complement to a Pilates program. Since CARDIOLATES® integrates rebounding with alignment principles, one can burn fat while improving alignment and posture. Thus, CARDIOLATES® is an efficient and effective solution.

  • Cinzia Galletto - Fletcher Towelwork® - Teaser Room

    Fletcher towelwork developed by PILATES MASTER Ron Fletcher over the course of 4 decades, this unique technique ranges from simple, yet highly effective movements developed to balance and stabilize the shoulder girdle- to beautiful complex, challenging full-body patterns.

    Fletcher Towelwork® is a signature feature of the Fletcher Work®. Ron developed the full syllabus of towel exercises over several decades of working with his students and teachers. Others have borrowed the Fletcher Towelwork™ and call it Pilates Towelwork, not giving credit to Ron. Fletcher Towelwork® was a direct response to the need for understanding of shoulder girdle stabilization and arm movement. Basic Towelwork can be taught to beginners as an easy and effective home exercise program. Towelwork is versatile and can be adapted from classical standing Towelwork into seated and supine positions. Towelwork is also integrated into the Fletcher Work® on the Spine Corrector. The Fletcher Work® has developed and incorporated a wide spectrum of Towelwork extending from simple range of motion exercises into beautiful complex movement patterns that challenge the advanced student of movement. Towelwork benefits the student in these ways:

    • Enhances depression and retraction of the shoulder girdle;
    • Opens and expands the anterior chest and shoulder muscles;
    • Corrects forward head posture;
    • Increases range of motion in the cervical spine;
    • Prepares the shoulder girdle for weight bearing work on equipment.

    Professionals regard the Fletcher Towelwork® as highly effective, safe, and easily accessible to patients and students.
